Court the evangelical vote, as well as secure a VP candidate who owed Trump a favor. As I’ve mentioned before, Pence was on the fast track to getting voted out before the Trump campaign threw him a political lifeline.

“…The public should be able to trust that the Supreme Court, of all institutions, will hold itself to the highest ethical standards and always follow the law. The Supreme Court must immediately adopt an enforcement mechanism that independently evaluates possible conflicts of interest and ensures judicial compliance with the Court’s Code of Conduct and the law.”

Omfg. Fontana police extract a false murder confession from a man after 17 hours of interrogation after he reported his father was missing. They brought his dog into the room and told him to say goodbye because they were taking the animal to be put down. He tried to kill himself.
His dad was at LAX alive and well.
His lawyer settled for 900K because he was afraid a court would overturn a jury award on qualified immunity because there is no existing precedent for punishing police that psychologically torture you using your own pets to confess to a murder of a person who is still alive.
Even after his dad turned up, they got another search warrant and tried to hang a murder on him because of some blood specks in the bathroom. His dad is diabetic and checks his blood daily.

Ledes and subjects that completely bury the important information in articles are going to be the death of America.
Whenever I interact with non-Americans, especially from people who were not educated in the English language, they look at the subject lines from the New York times and other newspapers and are completely confused when the article has much more information buried.
But this is true about Americans too — the New York Times might have correct information, but they bury it, and people looking at just the lede and subject will ignore the rest of the article and get something different out of it.

The very large Siberian elm tree in our front yard has roots that have infiltrated our sewer lines. We have a plumber who comes out about every two years to clear the lines with a rooting tool. Since we’ve used him, we’ve had no issues as long as he comes out regularly to clear the pipes.
He’s mentioned about the plumbers who would insist the only solution is to dig up the sewer line and replace it. In addition to the cost, it would damage the tree’s root system and endanger the tree.
He just retired. Sigh. Not sure what we’ll do now. He’s the only person I don’t mind hiring to do work (I usually do it all myself) since he has the proper tools.

On the one hand, we send our police out into a war zone with a population that is often armed and potentially dangerous. They tend to shoot first and assess the situation later.
Still, police know that they can act with relative immunity and impunity and too many of them take undue advantage of it.

Biden campaign official meets with Haley supporters hours after she said she’d vote for TrumpA Biden campaign official met Wednesday night with Nikki Haley supporters from across several states in a pre-scheduled Zoom call hours after the former Republican presidential candidate said she would be voting for Donald Trump, two sources familiar with the call told CNN.
The meeting was part of an ongoing effort by the Biden campaign to reach out to Haley voters. It was organized by the Haley Voters Working Group.
Conservative Haley backers from Virginia, Massachusetts, Vermont, California, Florida, Georgia, Arizona and North Carolina joined the call, including members of Haley’s former state leadership teams and the organization Women for Nikki.
The call, which one source characterized as a constructive initial step, began with a Q&A session for about 35 minutes with the Biden campaign official, who wanted to know which policy issues were most important to the Haley supporters. Another source confirmed that the official on the call was Juan Peñalosa, the deputy political director for President Joe Biden’s campaign.
After Peñalosa left the call, the source said the conversation continued among the group, with a “few moments of mourning” over Haley’s decision to back Trump along with a recognition that it wasn’t a full-throated endorsement.

But on what grounds could they block a movie in court? It’s literally the bedrock principle of CU that the government has no role to play in blocking those kinds of movies. It violates the 1A of the filmmakers, and likely dozens of laws. Would a conservative judge actually try this?
re: #94 aatharuv
Remember the blonde woman from somewhere in the south who went missing in Aruba a few years back (Natalie Holloway?), and was eventually found murdered.
Don’t think she was ever found, but I think they finally got a confession from Joran van der Sloot(sp?) the he killed her and dumped her body in the ocean.

IMO this is a category error — Republican judges don’t give a shit about law, or consistency, or anything like that. All they care about is money and power, for themselves personally and for the Party.

Maybe he makes a trademark claim on the name The Apprentice, I don’t know. Not a lawyer, but I know if you have enough money you can tie things up in court even if it is BS.
granted there are lots of different law enforcement departments around the country
- large, small, big city, small, state, city, sheriffs, etc.
- for the most part, L/E is self policing
- there is virtually no outside oversight
- there are virtually no consequences, and even with egregious behavior that does NOT preclude being hired somewhere else.
(most of that is the opposite with say teachers)
- as a system, overarching and generalized and painted with a broad brush, it’s atrocious.
- worse because it’s ostensible/purported job is to protect *us*.
- every person goes into that profession voluntarily. they know the risks and responsibilities and should be held to a *higher* standard, not a lower one.
that’s clearly not how it works
- there are failures reported almost daily
— field failures, behavior failures, etc
- and there are accountability/responsibility failures.
— it *appears* the job of review boards is to protect their own (just like it *appears* alito and thomas are just what they are)
- some of that is because there are so many leos, there will always be some level of failure (as has been said)
- however, a large enough sample over a long enough period of time more than “suggests” that what we read daily *is* reasonably representative of the entire profession.

Dear Residents,
2024 is going to be a historic year for cicada emergence in Chicago and Illinois. Billions of cicadas emerge after 17 years from two broods.
Illinois is one of two states that will host both broods this year. The dual emergence hasn’t been seen for centuries, with Brood XIII and Brood XIX both set to pop out of the ground simultaneously.
This rare occurrence last happened 221 years ago. Some areas are already seeing them. We have advised with our pest control, but unfortunately there is nothing we can do to treat or prevent this from happening.
Cicadas are loud, but harmless. Any work orders that come in for cicadas will be cancelled, as we are not able to do anything. We thank everyone in advance for your understanding as we all go through this event together.
I’m going to put in a maintenance request to make the sun come up later in the day so I don’t wake up at 6am. They’re used to dumb requests. They can handle it.

IMO it is way past time to take a pattern and practice argument showing bias to the appeals court.
All the world knows Cannon is Trump’s creature, so why is it that the only place this fact can’t be recognized is in that appeals court?

That’s why the main argument needs to be an “emperor’s new clothes” argument — if obviously bad faith actors are abusing the system, then the courts should not be helpless to deal with that.

Two years after we bought Beth Hart tickets for Hershey, it’s booked for September.
I will hope to hear her.
She’s a hot mess, and it comes out in her performance.
She drains herself.
Her and the band love Europe, and I understand why.

They listen.
They are respectful.
Here it’s assholes screaming over the quiet parts.
Kills me.

the courts are not helpless. they are complicit.
the system is being strained, because who woulda ever thought…
plus only one side is respecting and trying to play by the rules

I have the tee shirt. I bought it at the time to be able to show posterity that nasty shit was happening then.
The Shaky Foundation of Trump’s Lead: Disengaged Voters
The polls have shown Donald Trump with an edge for eight straight months, but there’s one big flashing warning sign suggesting that his advantage might not be quite as stable as it looks. That warning sign: His narrow lead is built on gains among voters who aren’t paying close attention to politics, who don’t follow traditional news and who don’t regularly vote.

No problem. The original ruling applied only to films that harmed Democrats. This is a movie that attacks Republicans — so it requires an entirely different standard.
so DeWine is not playing it straight w/r/t getting biden on the ballot
he adds a poison pill for Dems banning foreign contributions to state campaigns along with new PAC rules
the dems are calling it a poison pill
apparently (i’m cutting and pasting from several places)
- Ohio Republicans desperately want Biden on the ballot.
- Because their senate candidate, Moreno, wouldn’t stand a chance against Sherrod Brown straight up.
- Moreno needs the lift of a Presidential level turnout to win. In fact, that’s the only way they win.
so their remedy is to try to extract concessions for something they want and need to happen
re: #146 Dangerman
I’m assuming it’s the PAC rules that are the problem?
